six years ago in Shanghai a group of Chinese people approached me to join them for tea. we walked away from the surrounding crowds, down some side streets until it was silent of traffic, people. a short distance away an old woman was waiting for us. we followed her through an indistinct main entrance, then a clear glass door that led through a long corridor that opened up into a windowless, yellow room. it was just us. we drank tea and soon the ceremony was over. I got up to leave and found the door I had just come through was locked. I began violently kicking the door until it slid open. back at the end of the corridor, the main entrance had also been locked. the metal shutter too was rolled down, from the outside. a well-built South-african man and his girlfriend helped me raise the shutter. I thought my phone was stolen. adrenaline pushed me to return and find it. I stole two plastic dragon figurines and a metallic golden frog from the table where i drank the tea. i used them to barter with the old lady to get my phone back. I later found my phone in my bag. I still have the dragons and the frog.
